Description
Fairlawn, located on Elysian Fields, is a villa built around 1820-1830 that has since been divided into two houses, with Fairlawn now functioning as flats. The building is two storeys high and has a stucco exterior. It features a low pitch hipped slate roof with wide boxed eaves.
The Fairlawn side includes a verandah supported by cast iron columns and a first-floor balcony. A central oeuil de boeuf window is located on the first floor, flanked by French windows that have marginal glazing and a circular centre pane above rectangular top lights. The ground floor also has similar French windows and a central door with three fielded panels, the upper two of which are round-headed.
Lawn End, the other side of the villa, has paired round-headed windows on the first floor. The sashes retain their glazing bars, creating a tracery pattern in the rounded heads, and are set in moulded frames. The ground floor features four casement windows, each with four rows of seven panes, in flush moulded frames. A later addition includes a recessed entrance bay on the left, which has a glazed door and a two-light casement window on the first floor.
Fairlawn is part of a group of early to mid 19th century villas situated in a particularly beautiful setting on a residential cul-de-sac in the upper part of town.
