Description
Villa, now two dwellings, dating from approximately the 1820s and 1830s. The walls are stuccoed, with slate hanging to the rear (south) side, and feature wide bracketed eaves to a hipped slate roof with stucco stacks. The building has a double-depth plan with a central stairhall. It is built in a Picturesque Classical style. The north front, which faces the road, has two storeys and a four-window range, with a slightly projecting bay to the left. A C19 six-panelled door, with four panes of glass, is set behind a porch with Doric columns and pilasters. Horned 2/2-pane sashes are found in moulded wood architraves, with the exception of a tall six-pane window above the porch and a canted bay window with glazing-bar casements. The symmetrical west garden front has three windows on each floor: horned 2/2-pane sashes in moulded wood architraves on the first floor, and French windows with C19 Venetian shutters on the ground floor, now fronted by a tented verandah added in the 1980s. The southern rear elevation retains two early C19 six/six-pane sashes and a mid-C20 rear extension. The east elevation retains an early C19 six/six-pane sash and a later horned 8/8-pane sash, both set above a mid-C20 extension. All elevations are articulated by pilasters. The interior of No. 2 contains early C19 panelled doors set within moulded architraves to the first floor. Camden is part of a group of early C19 villas located in a residential cul-de-sac in an elevated part of the town, representing an early example of ‘garden suburb’ planning.
