Description
Elysian Fields in Somerton is a roughcast villa built around 1830-1840, featuring two storeys and some later alterations. It has a low-pitched hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves.
The east garden front is symmetrical and has three windows. The first floor includes low French Gothic windows with intersecting glazing bars at the heads. Each window has a wooden balcony with diamond panels; the central balcony is wider and has a rail that sweeps up to supports reaching the eaves. The outer ground floor windows are canted tent roof bays with four lights, two facing the front and pointed top panes. The left bay has a small terrace beside it with a diamond pattern iron balustrade. The central French Gothic window features a large tympanum with intersecting glazing bars, and the centre pane is hinged.
On the north side, the entrance has three first-floor windows, with a central Gothic casement and two altered windows. The ground floor has been built out with a slate roof, featuring two later tripartite windows and a central door with six flush panels.
Somerton is part of a group of early to mid-19th century villas located in a particularly fine setting on a residential cul-de-sac in the upper part of the town.
