Description
Greendale Barton is a former farmhouse that has been divided into three dwellings. It dates from the 17th century and has undergone later alterations. The building features roughcast cob on stone footings, with the rear wing made of brick, some of which appears to be from the late 18th century. It has gabled-end slate roofs and a three-room, through-passage plan, with the higher end located to the right of the passage and a substantial service-end rear wing.
The rear of the building has an external lateral stack with a moulded cap and brick shaft that heats the hall, as well as end stacks for both the inner room and the service end, and an axial stack for the wing. The building is two storeys high. The front, facing southwest, has late 19th and 20th-century casement windows, a lean-to extension, and an early 20th-century gabled-end wing. The rear is more visually coherent with a four-window range; the first floor features 2-, 3-, and 4-light casement windows, with the two to the right of the stack appearing to be from the 19th century. The ground floor has a 4-light casement window in each of the three rooms.
The inner face of the wing has a five-window range, all 19th-century casements on the first floor with two lights each, and three 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor. The interior of the service end was inspected and includes one large deeply chamfered unstopped cross ceiling beam. There are two jointed crucks with upper blades that may be later than the lower blades, morticed and pegged at the apex, and two similar trusses over the higher end, visible in the roof space, which are probably jointed crucks as well.
