Description

The Woodbury Salterton Primary School was built around 1847, financed by Marianne Pidsley. Its architect is unknown. It is constructed from dressed rubble limestone, incorporating volcanic trap, and has a gabled-end roof covered in fish scale pattern tiles. The school comprises a main two-cell range and a central rear wing. School rooms are located to the right and left, accessed through a central projecting porch with separate entrances to each side, and a clock tower with a bellcote above.

The two school rooms have projecting front bays on the left and right of the porch. The left-hand bay has a late 20th-century single-storey extension. Each school room's front bay has three square-headed lancet windows, with the central window taller than the others. The central porch projection has a gabled roof almost as tall as the main range’s roof; two small windows flank the tall clock tower within the gable wall. The clock tower features offsets, a pointed two-light window, a recessed clock set within an ogee-headed canopy, decorated with cusping, a hood mould, a finial, and an informal scroll with a motto below the sill. An open bellcote with a pyramidal roof and pinnacle sits atop the tower. Simple pointed doorways are positioned on either side of the central projection. Diagonal angle buttresses are present on the main range, and the side elevations feature three square-headed lancet windows. A verandah with arched timber supports is located on the left-hand side elevation.

The building displays an attractive and distinctive design. Historic engravings suggest it was intended to be visually grouped with the nearby church and vicarage.
