Description
The Old Vicarage is a detached house, originally the vicarage for Woodbury Salterton, dating to approximately 1845. It has brick gable-ended slate roofs with deeply overhanging eaves. The house follows a double-depth plan, with the main rooms arranged on either side of a central entrance hall, which has a two-storey porch. Service rooms are located in a rear wing, with a parallel roof of narrower span and cross gables to the rear.
The front of the house is symmetrical, with three bays, the central bay projecting and featuring wavy cusped bargeboarding to the gable end. Above the central arched entrance, which incorporates two square-headed lancet windows beneath its hood mould, are 2:4:2 pane oriel windows. The side bays have a two-light casement window on the first floor, and bay windows below, which have hipped roofs and tall, three-light casements with stone transoms. A similar bay window is located on the right-hand side of the front range, with a two-light window above and a lancet window in the gable wall. Casement windows are found elsewhere, with some late 20th-century alterations. The vicarage was designed to sit picturesquely alongside the contemporary school and parish church.
