Description
The Parish Church of Holy Trinity is a parish church built in 1844, funded by Marianne Pidsley, and consecrated the same year when Woodbury Salterton became a separate ecclesiastical parish from Woodbury. The church is constructed of random rubble, with some stone, particularly at the west end and part of the north wall, made from Salcombe Regis stone that was reused from the medieval tithe barn at Woodbury, which was demolished for this purpose. It also includes Heavitree and Exmouth sandstone. The roof features a decorated slate gabled end with heavy gable coping.
The layout includes a nave, chancel, south porch, and a north-east vestry. Originally, the west end gable had a bellcote. The south side of the church has four bays for the nave, including the porch, with windows that have two lights and geometrical Decorated tracery. The buttresses have two offsets and are set back at an angle. The north side mirrors this with four identical window bays and features a large four-light west window. The chancel, which is lower than the nave, has cusped lancets and a three-light geometrical Decorated window. The stone carving on the hood mould terminals is crisp, and numerous biblical texts are inscribed, even on the buttresses.
Inside, the church is tall, featuring an arched-brace roof with kingposts. The chancel arch is made of Heavitree stone and was originally painted to resemble Beer stone. The furnishings are contemporary. The church stands out for its height and makes a significant contribution to the village scene.
