Description
A row of three cottages, dating to around 1600. The cottages are constructed with roughcast cob walls on stone footings, with brick patching and window surrounds. The roof is gabled and covered in slate. Originally a three-room, through-passage house, it had a service end to the left of the passage. A tall axial stack backs onto the passage; a side oven to the left-hand end stack heated the service end. Later axial and end stacks were likely added when the house was converted into cottages. A single early newel stair remains to the rear of the service-end stack. The cottages are two storeys high, with a six-window front on each floor. Most windows are 2-light casements, four appearing to date from the 19th century, with separate doors for each cottage. A brick outshut extends to the rear, under a catslide roof, and contains 20th-century windows, including a 2-light dormer. Internally, the service end features a cross ceiling beam with hollow step stops, a fireplace with a chamfered and stopped lintel, and a newel stair that appears to be original. The passage has lath and plaster partitions, and the hall features deeply chamfered cross beams with hollow step stops. The roof structure consists of two jointed crucks, morticed and pegged at the collar and apex. The higher-end extension has two straight principals.
