Description
Digger's Rest Public House is a public house dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with later alterations and extensions. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone footings and features a thatched roof with gabled ends. Originally, it had a three-room through-passage layout, with the higher end located to the right of the passage. The hall was initially open to the roof and shows significant smoke blackening, while the service end likely had two storeys from the start. The inner room was floored before the hall, which jetties into it. The hall is heated by an external rear lateral stack, while the service end stack has been moved to the center due to the building's expansion into a public bar. The right-hand end stack heats the inner room, and all stacks have brick shafts.
The front of the building features a three-window range, with two- and three-light casements on the ground floor and a small 20th-century bay window in the inner room. There are also 20th-century extensions to the left-hand end and rear, along with two two-light half dormers at the back. Inside, there is a plank and muntin screen separating the hall from the inner room, with some planks removed and chamfered muntins featuring run-out stops about two feet above the ground on the hall side. One chamfered door jamb remains from this screen. The joists of the inner room jetty approximately 12 inches into the hall, and the hall fireplace is concealed. The roof consists of three jointed crucks, with purlins trenched for a large diagonal ridge-piece, and the crucks extend down to ground level. The hall shows signs of sooting, and the truss between the hall and inner room is not visible from the inspection hatch.
