Description
Smithincott Barton is a farmhouse, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the 17th century, and possibly incorporating earlier fabric. It is constructed of roughcast rubble with a hipped thatched roof. Originally, the house featured a 3-room plan with a through-passage and an unusually long service wing to the right of the passage, which may have once been a shippon. The main range of the building was not inspected internally. The service wing has an end stack, and there is an axial stack at the junction between the main range and a higher front wing, both appearing to be later additions. A hall is heated by a rear lateral external stack, and another lateral external stack serves the wing. The house is two storeys high. The front elevation has irregular window placement; the first floor has two 3-light casement windows – one with 15 leaded panes to the outer lights – and another window at the extreme right-hand end. Below, there are 3-light casement windows either side of an openwork timber porch, with a 19th-century door leading to the passage. A third window is at the right-hand end, and a C20 window is located in the wing. The rear elevation features later additions and C20 casement windows. The interior of the wing was inspected and contains four cross ceiling beams, two of which have deep chamfers and hollow step stops with bar. It also has two jointed cruck trusses, halved and pegged at apex, likely dating from the mid to late 17th century.
