Description

The premises occupied by "Trumps Stores" is a building from 1633, located on the west side of Fore Street. It features a mid-19th century refronting of a slightly earlier structure. The building has three storeys and is faced with stucco, accented by rusticated quoins. It has a low-pitched hipped slate roof with paired brackets supporting wide eaves.

On the upper floors, there are four windows with recessed broad framed sashes that have no glazing bars, set in stucco surrounds. The second floor windows are shouldered and feature key-stones. The first floor windows are adorned with cornices supported by foliate brackets, and there are cast iron flower guards and block sills on consoles beneath them.

The ground floor retains its original shop front, which includes four camber-headed windows flanked by pilasters with panels in between. Each window has panelled risers and a sloping glass panel below, displaying gold ornamental lettering. The central entrance has showcases that are splayed into a recessed door, which is glazed and divided into four panes with an oval centre pane and two lower panels. To the left of the shop front is a side door with three tall vertical panels and a lower rectangular panel, topped with a rectangular fanlight.

A projecting moulded cornice runs across the entire front, interrupted by ornamental brackets with dentil caps. Inside, the premises still feature some original shop fittings, including mahogany shelves with miniature turned balustrades and cartouche centre pieces. Heavy Ionic iron columns support the ceiling.

The premises occupied by "French's", "Fields" (Mans Shop), "Boots", and "Trumps Stores" form a group.
