Description
The Herald Office is an early to mid 19th century building located at the corner of Fore Street and East Street. It is a three-storey structure made of colour-washed brick, topped with a low-pitched gable end slate roof and shallow eaves. The front features one window, with a tripartite window on the second floor that has a central sash with glazing bars, a multiple keystone stucco flat arch, and a thin block sill.
On the first floor, there is a canted bay window inserted below a similar flat arch, but without glazing bars. The frieze and cornice add decorative detail. The ground floor has a Victorian shop front that has been modernised but retains one panelled pilaster and a cornice with elaborate iron cresting that extends to the side on East Street. The south front includes three sash windows with intact glazing bars, as well as a two-storey round-headed stair light sash with radiating glazing bars at the top.
Adjacent to the Herald Office is a slightly earlier two-storey red brick building. This building has two windows, one of which is blind, and features recessed tripartite sashes with intact glazing bars and flat brick arches. There are two doorways; one is partly blocked but includes a rectangular fanlight and panelled reveals, while the other has six fielded panels with a tall rectangular fanlight. The Herald Office and the surrounding premises, including Olive Ltd, Stead and Simpson, The Spinning Wheel, and the Irish Tobacconist, form a cohesive group.
