Description
No 1 Church Street is part of the premises occupied by Field's and dates from 1633, with early 19th-century features and later 19th-century alterations. The building has a symmetrical stucco-faced elevation of three storeys, with a shop front added later. The roof is concealed by a projecting moulded cornice. On the second floor, there are three slightly recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars, set in moulded frames with moulded sills, and heavy drip moulds have been added. The first floor features Victorian shallow canted bay outer windows, with the side lights being round-headed and supported by fluted brackets on leaf blocks that hold up a cornice. The centre window on this floor is similar to those on the second floor but lacks glazing bars. The shop front consists of two canted bays with hipped roofs and rosettes in the frieze beneath the moulded cornice. There is a central doorway that is partly glazed. No 1 Church Street forms a group with Nos 2 to 4 (consecutive), Waterloo House, Barretts Flat, and the premises occupied by Field's in the Market Place.
