Description

Fortfield View, located on Church Street, dates from around 1830 to 1840. This two-storey building features a symmetrical row of shops and houses, with a stucco facade and shallow terminal pilaster strips at each end. It has a low-pitched gable end slate roof with a moulded eaves cornice. Each unit has a flat-roofed casement dormer, except for No 8, which has two dormers, and No 9, which has a larger dormer with glazed cheeks.

No 9 has one window on the first floor, while the others have two each. The windows are tall, slightly recessed sashes with intact glazing bars and thin drip moulds above. The original shop fronts are defined by thin panelled pilasters, with a cannon frieze and cornice above. However, the frontages of Nos 9 and 10 have been altered. No 8 features a central three-light mullioned and transomed window with flanking doors; the shop door is partly glazed with two flush panels and a leaded rectangular fanlight, while the house door has four flush panels with a large diamond glazing pattern in the rectangular fanlight.

No 9 retains its pilasters, but the glazing and doors have been changed. No 10 has been entirely modernised. No 11 includes a three-light mullioned window and a side window, with a shop door that is glazed with a bottom panel, and a house door with two flush and two moulded panels topped by a rectangular fanlight.

Nos 6 to 11 form a group.
