Description

Amyatt's Terrace is a row of six two-story double-fronted cottages dating to around 1830. Number 6 is set back at the east end and is not integral to the terrace’s design. The cottages are stuccoed, with walls topped by a plain coping that conceals the eaves of the gable-ended slate roofs. Numbers 1 and 5 project slightly forward. The central house (Number 3) features banded pilaster strips with ball finials and a pediment, both topped with ball finials. Shallow two-story canted bays flank the front, with sash windows featuring glazing bars and panelled aprons. A veranda connects these bays on the first floor. Numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5 have sash windows with intact glazing bars, set within moulded flush frames. Number 1 has hood moulds above the windows, and Number 4 has Venetian shutters. Originally, each cottage had a four-panel door and a cornice hood supported by shaped brackets; this feature survives on Number 5, while porches have been added to the others. Number 6, set back from the main terrace, is also stuccoed with a half-hipped slate roof and a shallow eaves cornice. It has a two-window front with a central doorway, featuring two-light casements with glazing bars, a later porch with a bayed front, glazed sides, and a hipped slate roof. The terrace is situated in a significant location relative to Coburg Terrace on the opposite side of Coburg Road, in relation to the tennis courts, and to the open arrangement of this part of the town. Numbers 1 to 6 form a group.
