Description
Numbers 1-8 Adelaide Terrace is a terrace of eight houses built around 1835. The houses are stucco-faced, with the ground floors channelled to resemble ashlar stonework. The end houses and two central houses are slightly projecting. There are three storeys, attics, and basements to each house, with each house originally featuring two windows. Numbers 2, 3, 6, and 7 retain their original Doric porches, which have triglyphs to the entablatures and are surmounted by cast-iron balconies. Number 1 has a 20th-century concrete porch, while Numbers 4, 5, and 7 have replacement columns. Numbers 1, 5, and 7 lack balconies. Numbers 4 and 5 have their porches paired to appear as a single house. All houses have six-panel doors, glazed with upper panels and overlights. The windows are recessed hornless sashes. Numbers 4 and 5 have pilaster strips at the angles, and slightly projecting centre bays with a small pediment above containing an oculus, giving the appearance of one larger house. Number 4 has a small bowed cast-iron balcony to the first-floor left-hand window. Nos 1-3 and No.7 have cornices and blocking courses; numbers 6 and 7 do not. The interior of the properties has not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings define the area. The terrace is raised above a former carriage drive and gardens, now a car park. Numbers 1-8 form a group value context.
