Description

Hope Cottage is a two-storey house built around 1830, located at the corner of Coburg Road and Church Street. It has an L-shaped plan and is faced with stucco. The roof features a combination of hipped and gable ends, covered with slate, and has projecting eaves. The section of the house facing Church Street has a steeper roof pitch and an attic, with a hipped gable end on the west side.

The Church Street elevation is asymmetrical, featuring four first-floor windows, two of which are blind sashes. The window above the porch has radial glazing bars and a rounded head. On the ground floor, there are two round-headed sash windows and a trellis porch with a flat roof and cornice. The west front on Coburg Road has five first-floor windows and four on the ground floor, with a central doorway. Two of the first-floor windows below the hipped gable are later canted bays with tent roofs and rendered aprons. The other windows are two and three-light casements with Venetian shutters. The central door consists of two flush panels and four fielded panels, topped with a projecting cornice hood supported by small shaped brackets.

Hope Cottage holds an important position in relation to the Parish Church and is part of a group that includes the War Memorial Service Men's Club and Harston in Church Street, as well as Amyatt's Terrace and other Regency buildings in the area.
