Description

A pair of houses dating from the late 19th century, located on Marshfield Road, Chippenham, and forming part of the industrial suburb developed after the arrival of the railway. The houses are constructed of squared limestone ashlar with freestone quoins and dressings, brick sides and rear, and have a slate roof with moulded ashlar stacks in a 17th-century style to the sides and rear. They are built to a double-depth plan and are in a Flemish Renaissance style.

The exterior is two storeys with attics, presenting a symmetrical block where each house is two windows wide. The central ranges are stepped forward under Dutch gables with ornamental coping and plaques to the nowy-headed apexes. These gables have ornamental semicircular-arched openings and rainwater heads to the valley gutter. The attics have 2-light windows with richly carved festoons to the aprons, and the first floor features 3-light windows, set above a sill string course. The outer ranges have cornices and ornamental parapets over 3-light windows with semicircular arched leaded lights. The rear has forward-facing brick gables. Projecting corners of the central ranges have bays forming porches with chamfered architraves, 6-panel doors, Tuscan columns to the outer corners, and 4-light bay windows to the inner corners. All windows are transomed with leaded overlights. The interior was not inspected.
