Description

South or Harnham Gate and South Gate House, located in The Close, is a Grade I listed structure dating from the 14th century. The gate features dressed stone with a double chamfered four-centred archway that has a continuous moulding on the east front. Above the archway, there are seven corbels supporting a moulded string decorated with rosettes and angle gargoyles. The inner west front has a deeply revealed segmental arch that transitions into the wall. The ornamented string above mirrors the east front but lacks corbels. The gates themselves are plain, ledged, heavily studded, and stepped, with wrought iron bands that may be original.

Adjoining the gate is South Gate House, numbered 74, which was rebuilt in the 18th or early 19th century. It incorporates parts of older walling in the lower area, with the upper portion constructed of brick. The older walling consists of stone and flint. The house is two storeys high with a hipped old tile roof and features two two-light casements. The first floor has a Gothic glazing pattern, while the ground floor includes a three-light casement and a six-panel door to the right, topped with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets.

All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
