Description
North Gate is a Grade I listed building located in The Close, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. It features a Perpendicular architectural style and is constructed of coursed stone over two storeys.
The south front showcases a large, moulded, three-centred arch that spans the roadway. Above this arch, there are two 2-light stone mullioned casements with pointed arched lights on the first floor, which flank a central niche supported by small side buttresses and topped with a carved canopy. Inside the niche is a modern statue of King Edward VII. The wall is adorned with moulded battlemented cresting, which is further enhanced with cusped panel ornament on a moulded string and shields in the upper parts of the battlements.
The north front is more elaborate, featuring a similar archway that is framed by a rectangular drip mould, enriched spandrels, and a band of raised circles above, decorated with a quatrefoil panel treatment. It also has two similar first-floor windows flanking a large central Coat of Arms. The gates are made of 17th-century panelled oak and feature miniature crenellation, although the portcullis has been removed.
All the listed buildings in The Close create an outstanding group.
