Description
47 The Close is a building reputed to have been a cottage for men working on the Cathedral. It possibly has origins from the 14th century, but the present structure is a rebuilding from the 16th or 17th century. The building has two storeys, with a brick ground floor and a timber-framed upper part that features some brick infilling and herringbone patterns. On the first floor, there are two and three-light 19th-century wooden casement windows. The ground floor includes a four-light 17th-century casement window to the right and a two-light 19th-century casement window to the left, both flanking a ledged door in a moulded frame with a small pent hood above. To the west, there is a taller two-storey section with a hipped end to the gable, and the upper part is timber-framed. All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
