Description
51 and 52 The Close are two buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries that have been considerably altered. They are two storeys high with an attic and have a stucco finish on the upper floors, while the ground floor is made of painted brick. Number 52 features two stuccoed gables above the eaves, and number 51 has a stucco-faced gabled dormer. The steep gable end has a partly old tile roof. Number 52 has irregular 19th-century sash windows and casements that are flush framed. Both buildings have plain four-panel doors set in pilaster surrounds topped with a small cornice. The south front of number 52, facing Choristers Green, includes a gable with plain 19th-century bargeboards and a superimposed rectangular bay window from the late 19th century. Inside number 52, there are elements of timber structure remaining, including wall posts and parts of the roof structure in the attic, such as some principal rafters, a crown post truss, and massive tie beams, purlins, and windbraces. All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
