Description
This is a late 17th-century former stable block, originally part of Mompesson House. The building is constructed of red brick on a projecting stone plinth, with a stone string course marking the first floor. Stone quoins and a moulded, coved eaves cornice are visible. The steeply pitched roof is covered in old tiles.
The first floor has four two-light stone mullioned windows with leaded glazing; the outer two were formerly blocked and have been restored. A former loft door, centrally located, is now a window set within a cased architrave surround with a double scroll head. The ground floor also features four two-light stone mullioned and transomed windows, along with a central arched door framed by rusticated stone, with projecting springers and a triple keystone.
The building contributes significantly to the outstanding group of listed buildings in The Close.
