Description
Bishop's Gate is a Grade I listed structure located in The Close, dating from the 14th to 15th century. It is a two-storey building featuring an asymmetrical arrangement of rubble and tile walling, complemented by ashlar dressings and an old tile roof. The gateway has a four-centred arched opening with a gabled room above, which includes a small single pointed light at the center of the gable. To the left, there is a short one-storey wing, while to the right, a longer one-storey wing with an attic features two gabled dormers, each containing a three-light leaded casement window. Although it is picturesque, it is of a simpler design compared to other gates. The front facing east onto Exeter Street mirrors this style, showcasing a two-light traceried pointed window in the gable. All the listed buildings in The Close create an outstanding group.
