Description
The building at 109A, 109B, and 109 Exeter Street has a 16th-century origin, significantly altered in the mid-18th century. Originally a single property, it is now divided into two. The exterior is a brick re-facing of a timber-frame structure, with a steep-pitched gable end covered in old tile. A small gabled dormer window is present. The eaves feature a distinctive toothed brick cornice. The first floor has three windows with flush-framed sash glazing, likely replacing four original windows. The ground floor of number 109A has a mid-19th century six-pane shop window, and a glazed and panelled door set at an angle into a central passageway. Number 109 has a Victorian shop front with flanking pilasters, a four-light window with a thin transom and colonettes, and plain spandrels to the window heads. The frieze and cornice extend over the passage entry. The entrance to number 109B is located within the passageway, where the ends of visible beams feature curved stops. Internally, original corner posts with enlarged heads are visible, along with a butt purlin roof. This roof structure includes queen struts, tie beams, and windbraces, which are similar to the roof found at the nearby Crown and Inn. The building forms a group with numbers 99 to 112 on Exeter Street.
