Description
This barn, located to the northwest of Allington Manor Farmhouse, is a reconstruction from the 18th century of a fragment from a manor house dating to around 1600. It is constructed from rubble stone and features a corrugated sheet half-hipped roof with projecting opposed cart entries, half-hipped to the south and a lean-to to the north. The west end, much of the north wall, and part of the south wall are from the 1600 origin, showcasing fragments of a moulded plinth and moulded dripcourses on the west and north walls. The north wall also includes a large blocked 6-light recessed hollow-chamfer-moulded mullion and transom window. On the south wall, the right side has a moulded arched doorway, which previously had a door dated 1612 that has since been reused in Allington Manor Farmhouse. There is a narrow recessed chamfer-moulded light to the left and a broader similar light above, which is partially blocked. The manor house was built for Sir Gilbert Prynne. Additionally, at the southwest corner, there is a lean-to stable that extends south as a 10-bay range of stalls with circular piers, added around 1840-1850 for the Grittleton estate.
