Description
The former Institute, built in 1882, is located to the east of the Sunday School on Church Street. The south front is stuccoed with stone dressings and features a segmental archway leading to a courtyard. On the ground floor to the left, there are three lights, while paired three-light mullion windows with moulded heads are present. The roof is made of pantiles and has a lean-to on the southeast, which includes three rounded first-floor windows with glazing bars, a round-headed doorway, and two square-headed windows with keyed lintels on the ground floor.
The west front is constructed from coursed dressed stone and has a parapet with an asbestos slate roof topped with a crested ridge. This side also features two pairs of three-light mullion windows with moulded heads and drips, along with a gable to the right. A central ground floor doorway has a pointed arch, flanked by two pairs of lancets on each side.
The former Institute, along with the Sunday School, The Tabernacle United Reformed Church, and related structures, forms a group with Nos 24 to 26 (consecutive) and 2 and 3 Tabernacle Cottages.
