Description
The Former Women's Institute Tabernacle Cottages, located at No 25 Church Street, was built in 1871. This two-storey Gothic-style lodge features a symmetrical gabled design and is situated to the east of the gate screen to the Tabernacle. Constructed from dressed stone, it has a large three-light window on the first floor, along with an oculus on the south side.
On the ground floor, there is a through passage door with a pointed arch to the right. Notable details include two rainwater pipe heads dated 18 AD 71, which have animal head spouts set into the parapet. A two-storey, three-light square bay is positioned at the southwest angle, featuring traceried windows and trefoil panels below the first floor.
The first floor of the west front, which is No 1 Tabernacle Cottages, slightly projects on a modillion string course. It has a gabled break to the right with an entrance and a gable that includes shaped kneelers above a half-dormer with two lancet windows to the left. This is situated above a wide pointed relieving arch that contains a plain stepped lancet triplet on the ground floor. The building is topped with a concrete pantile roof and has two stone octagonal shaft chimneys.
The former Sunday School, along with the former 'Institute' to the east, and the Tabernacle United Reformed Church, create a group with Nos 24 to 26 (consecutive) and 2 and 3 Tabernacle Cottages.
