Description
The Tabernacle, United Reformed Church, was founded in 1771 and rebuilt in 1882. The stone at the west front notes the architects, Paull and Bonella, and the builder, William Smith. This Tudor-style church is two stories high with aisles, featuring five bays and a four-stage tower at the southwest end. It is constructed of ashlar stone. The west front has two lights with perpendicular tracery above two doors that have linked drip moulds and high stepped chamfer moulding around the reveals. There are corner buttresses and a parapetted gable. To the south, there are two-light windows on the ground floor and three-light windows arranged in two tiers above. A continuous cill mould runs along the first floor, which is slightly lower to the east where there is a doorway. The church has three rainwater hoppers dated 1885. The tower is topped by an octagonal stone-roofed cupola with traceried openings. The third stage of the tower is octagonal with a parapet and gargoyles. There is an angle oriel on the ground floor that connects the south aisle and the tower. An unusual extension to the northeast features a hipped roof and three pairs of very tall lancet windows with a circular pattern above. The former Sunday School, known as the 'Institute', is located to the east. The Tabernacle United Reformed Church and its related structures form a group with Nos 24 to 26 (consecutive) and 2 and 3 Tabernacle Cottages.
