Description
The five table tombs in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St James date from the late 18th century to the 19th century and serve as memorials.
The first tomb is that of Thomas Helliker, erected in 1876, commemorating a young man who was hanged during the Chartist riots in 1803. The second tomb, located immediately south of the Helliker tomb, dates to around 1800 and features weathered memorial tablets. The third tomb, situated to the north-west of the north porch, has early 19th-century quarter balusters at its corners, with weathered memorial tablets. The fourth tomb is located to the west of the north-west corner of the church and also features early 19th-century quarter balusters and weathered memorial tablets. The fifth tomb, belonging to Jacob Roberts and located to the south of the church's rear boundary wall, is a late 18th-century table tomb with engaged Doric columns at its corners; Jacob Roberts died in 1784.
These tombs, along with the Parish Church of St James, the Old Vestry Rooms, and several properties on Church Walk and Fore Street, form a significant group of historical interest.
