Description
Vergers Cottages, located on Church Street, were built in 1861 and are designed in the Tudor vernacular style. They are situated next to the Union Street Almshouses and appear to be part of the same design scheme. The building features a gabled break to the left and two gables to the right, with a total of two storeys constructed from rubble and topped with tiled roofs.
On the first floor, there are three two-light mullion casement windows, while the ground floor has two three-light mullion casement windows, all adorned with diamond leaded lattices. A double porch is positioned at the angle of the building, featuring pointed arches that lead to separate doorways.
Vergers Cottages, along with Nos 16 to 19, which incorporate the former National Schools, form a group with Nos 1 to 4 of the Union Street Almshouses, the street wall fronting the Almshouses, No 9, and St James's Hall on Union Street.
