Description
The barns at West Kennett Farm are a range of four structures dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are primarily timber framed and weatherboarded, though most are now covered with corrugated iron. The barns form three sides of a square, with the main range running north to south. The southern barn is the oldest, featuring five bays and a midstrey in the central bay facing west. It has wide straight angle braces supporting tie beam trusses, raking queen struts to the collar, and a single purlin roof. The gable sills are made of sarsen stone, and some of the timbers have been reused.
To the north, there is a similar five-bay barn with a midstrey, but this one has an aisle on the west side. It features a tie beam with straight struts to jowled posts, raking struts, and a collar. The entrance is built up towards the yard. Attached to the north end of this barn is a third barn, also five bays, which has central opposed cart doors and brick sills. It features reversed curved struts to the ties and vertical queen struts. At the south end, there is a fourth barn with two bays, also on brick sills, and its trusses are similar to the others. The range is completed by cattle stalling under a lower pitched roof.
