Description

South and West Barns at Cross Farm are two adjoining barns located on the south side of Chipperfield Road in Bovingdon. The southern barn dates from the 16th century and features an early 17th-century eastern bay, along with 19th-century extensions. The western barn is from the 17th century. Both barns have timber frames resting on brick sills, are covered in dark weatherboarding, and have steep roofs made of old red tiles.

These tall barns form the western and southern sides of the farmyard, with a carriageway passing through the southern barn. There are lean-to extensions on the eastern end and southeast wall, as well as a larger, three-bay open-ended store from the 19th century attached to the southwest. The southern barn, which faces north, has four bays supported by massive jowled posts and wide bays with unjowled central posts. It features a mid-height rail that is tennoned in-line, straight braces connecting to cambered tie-beams and wallplates, and inclined queen-posts supporting a clasped-purlin roof with straight wind braces. The early 17th-century eastern bay has curved braces and wind braces, along with an edge halved scarf joint and bridled butts.

The western barn, dating from the 17th century, has three bays and a projecting gabled porch on the eastern side of the middle bay, along with smaller rear doors. It also features jowled posts and a clasped-purlin roof with straight inclined queen-posts.
