Description
The White Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a single-storey rear service wing added later. It is timber-framed with a brick ground floor and roughcast upper walls, and has an old red tile roof. The house is two storeys high, originally of a two-cell plan with end chimneys and a central entrance, and features an outshut to the east. There are three windows on each floor. The front door has been moved to a western position from its original location. Large gable chimneys have oversailing caps, the eastern chimney being larger and projecting more. The windows are 2- and 3-light casements. A string course runs at floor level above the brick lower part of the building. The timber frame is of a box frame construction, with curved braces to undulating tie-beams. The roof is a clasped-purlin design with collar and queen-strut trusses, with the infill potentially being wattle and daub. The ground floor is tiled in a pattern of red and black tiles dating to the 18th century. The interior retains wainscotting, chamfered axial floor beams with stepped hollow stops, an open fireplace, and an old staircase, although it is now concealed by the present staircase. The building is of group value, recognised for its architectural and historical significance.
