Description
Street Farm is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates back to the 16th century, likely built for John de Street around 1530, and was extended into a barn to the east in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame with roughcast exterior and steep old red tile roofs, while the barn is weatherboarded.
The house is a long, two-storey structure facing south, set back from the road, with a continuous side jetty on the southern part. It has four windows across its two-storey façade, consisting of three bays for the hall and cross-passage, and two bays for the crosswing parlour at the east, which is adjacent to the contemporary barn now incorporated into the house.
The entrance is located at the west side of the hall, leading to a passage behind a large chimney, with a lower service wing to the west featuring an axial chamfered beam. A gabled stair turret is positioned on the north side at the junction of the hall and parlour. The windows are small, two-light flush casements, and there are old oak doors leading to the cross passage. The jetty is supported by knee braces on the main beams, and the interior showcases exposed timbers, including two axial parallel chamfered beams in the hall.
Notable features include arched niches in the large open fireplace and wall paintings of pomegranates behind 17th-century scratch-moulded panelling in the parlour. Additionally, there is a fine Italian carved Renaissance-style wellhead over a capped well by the rear door. The farmhouse bears a resemblance to another property known as Rent Street Barns.
