Description
The entrance barn at Rent Street Barns is a 16th-century structure that has been adapted to also function as a gatehouse. It features a timber frame covered in dark weatherboarding and has a steep roof made of old red tiles, which displays a chevron pattern of darker tiles. The barn consists of four bays and includes a gabled porch facing the road, located in the second bay from the west. Opposing double doorways now provide access to a carriageway leading to the courtyard of the house. There is a sympathetic west extension that serves as a dwelling. Attached to the southeast is a single-storey stable from the 18th century, also dark weatherboarded and topped with a steep old red tile roof. The barn is supported by heavy jowled posts and features curved braces connecting to the wallplates, along with a staggered mid-height rail. A central post is present in the gable. The original roof structure consists of clasped purlins resting on jowled posts, with collars and struts supporting the porch. The main roof was modified to a queen-post design in the early 19th century.
