Description

Ivy Cottage, Lantern Cottage, and Primrose Cottage are three adjoining houses located on Chipperfield Road, Bovingdon. No. 42, Ivy Cottage, dates back to the 16th century and was altered in the 19th century, while Nos. 44 and 46, Lantern Cottage and Primrose Cottage respectively, were built in the 18th century. No. 42 is timber-framed with brick nogging and roughcast rendering, while Nos. 44 and 46 are of painted brick. All three houses have steep roofs covered in old red tiles.

No. 42 is a small, two-cell, two-storey and attic house facing north, with an irregular front. It has two windows on each floor, with a door between. However, the right-hand side of the front is dominated by a large external chimney with offsets. A small lean-to extends from the west end. The windows are 2-light flush casements. Inside No. 42, there is a chamfered and stopped wooden lintel above the chimney, along with a chamfered axial beam to the floor. A central partition features an open truss with a quadrant tension brace, long curved braces and jowled posts, squint-butted scarf joints in the wallplates, a clasped-purlin roof, and curved wind braces. An old rear window has chamfered mullions. Nos. 42 and 44 are joined together on the east side and form a higher pair. Nos. 44 and 46, two storeys in height, have a tiled roof and casement windows. They display Boxmoor rights of grazing plaques, numbered 585 and 586. Nos. 44 and 46 are included in the listing for their group value.
