Description
The Old Smithy and No. 9 (The Old Forge) are a pair of cottages dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. They are constructed of rubble stone and feature a plain tile roof with coped gables. There are chimney stacks located at the rear gable ridge and on the north end wall, as well as on the north end wall of the extension to No. 9. The cottages are two stories high and have a main range with four windows, which is extended by one window range at the north end.
The main range includes one recessed ovolo-moulded two-light window and three timber casements. On the ground floor, there is a three-light ovolo-moulded window with a hoodmould and a relieving arch above it, along with a door set in a flush stone doorcase. There is also a three-light recessed ovolo-moulded window with a hoodmould and a door to No. 9 situated between buttresses, as well as a timber casement window to the right. The end extension features a timber casement window on each floor and has leaded lights. The south end wall has a relieving arch over the upper window.
Inside The Old Smithy, there is a large fireplace with a timber lintel on the rear wall and a cross passage with a smaller fireplace backing onto it.
