Description
No. 7 Cuttle Lane is a pair of cottages that have been combined into one house, dating from the mid-18th century, with an extension added to the south end later in the 18th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone and features stone tiled roofs. There is a south end wall stack and two stacks at the original end walls, made of brick on stone bases.
The original house is double fronted, with two 2-light cyma-moulded mullion windows above, featuring small paned sashes, and two 12-pane sashes in plain stone surrounds below. The former central door, which had a cyma-moulded surround, now has a 12-pane sash. This property was built at the same time as No. 8, which is dated 1762.
The extension has a straight joint to the left end and consists of a two-window range, with upper 2-light mullion windows, a ground floor 3-light window, and a 6-panel door in a chamfered surround. The ground floor and the upper left window have cyma-moulds, while the upper right window features stopped chamfer moulds, which may have been added later.
Historically, this property was a malt house, and there is a ruined malting shed at the rear, although it is not of special interest. Nos. 7 to 9 Cuttle Lane have group value as a range of 18th-century cottages under a single roof.
