Description

A pair of houses on Slaughterford Road dates from the early 18th century, with later additions and alterations to existing buildings. The construction is of squared rubble with an imitation slate roof. The central cottage, shared between numbers 1 and 2, is of one-and-a-half storeys and double-fronted, with a wall stack at the right end. It features two dormer gables with two-light bead-moulded mullion windows and dripmoulds. Coped gables have saddlestones. Below the dormers, two windows are set under a continuous dripmould, interrupted by a central, coped gabled stone porch with a saddlestone and large impost blocks. A two-light bead-moulded window is on the left, and an altered window is on the right. A two-storey range to the left, belonging to number 1, has an end wall stack. It features a two-light, cyma-moulded mullion window above, with a dripmould broken for a 19th-century 16-pane sash. A door is set within a chamfered surround with a hood on brackets. The south range to the right, belonging to number 2, is taller, with two storeys built over the end wall of the original cottage. An upper window has a raised bead-moulded surround, but now contains a 20th-century window. The ground floor has 20th-century metal windows, one in plain surrounds, the other in a damaged former doorcase. The original mullion windows have small-paned windows, with one side fixed and the other a sliding sash. Inside the central cottage, there is a Tudor-arched stone fireplace on the ground floor right side. The left-side range has very large section purlins to the roof, possibly suggesting an earlier date.
