Description

The Hollies is a house dating from the 1840s and 1850s. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings and has a hipped slate eaves roof, with end wall stacks. The house has three storeys and a three-window front. The windows are sashes within flush stone surrounds; the second floor windows have nine panes, the central first-floor window twelve panes, and the side windows sixteen panes. A ground-floor arched doorway has a six-panel door and fanlight, set within a Tuscan-columned stone porch. Later 19th-century three-sided stone canted bays with plate glass sashes are attached to each side of the ground floor. The facade is divided by raised ashlar strips defining the angles, plinth, first and second floor bands, and eaves. Horizontal bands extend around the west side, but flush quoins replace the angle strips. A single-story range with a slate roof and coped gables featuring saddlestones is attached to the rear, at the north-east angle. This range has low ashlar walling and timber windows in a band along the west side. The house is prominently situated facing south down Cuttle Lane and is listed for its group value.
