Description
The Gables is a house located in Castle Combe, built in 1705 and altered in 1877, as indicated by the datestones. The building is marked on the Ordnance Survey map as Three Gables. It features rubble stone that is painted with a sand-textured finish, a thatched roof, coped gables, and an ashlar end wall with ridge stacks. The house has one-and-a-half storeys and a three-window range, with a recessed central section.
The windows are recessed cyma-moulded mullions with hoodmoulds and leaded lights throughout. There are three coped dormer gables, each with two-light windows; one dormer has the datestone R.S. 1709, and another has E.C.L. 1877. On the ground floor, the left side has a three-light window and a door with a renewed stone hood; the center has a three-light window; and the right side features a door and a three-light window. The rear of the house has three dormer gables with timber mullion three-light windows. The building has undergone significant restoration in the 20th century.
