Description

Monks' Conduit is a water conduit dating from the 14th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a steeply pitched stone roof. The east front is gabled and includes a segmental chamfered doorway with a planked door, a slit vent, and two square vents above the door. The west side has one slit vent. Inside, there is a spring with two stone trusses supporting the roof, which have pierced pointed openings. The conduit was rebuilt in 1784 and is reputedly built over the spring that supplied water to the Cluniac priory established in 1125. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Wiltshire, numbered 267.
