Description
The conduit head, likely from the mid-12th century, is constructed from large sandstone blocks, with some lower parts refaced in brick and solid stone roofing blocks. It is a small square gabled structure set into a bank, making only the gable and roof visible. There is a small central entrance, probably from the 19th century, featuring a boarded door. Inside, the structure has a pointed vault and extends below ground level, with the water level recorded at 2 meters above the floor in 1975, leading to the water basin that fed the lead conduit. This conduit originally served Lichfield Cathedral, having been established in 1166 and used continuously until its abandonment in 1969. The conduit head and basin are still visible in the close.
