Description
Abnalls Cottage is a 17th-century cottage that was refaced in the late 18th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill, although the east front has been replaced with brickwork. The cottage has a tiled roof and a corniced brick ridge stack, along with an end stack on the right side. It stands two storeys high with a gable-lit attic and has a two-window front. The ground floor has widely spaced casement windows with segmental heads, and there is a central entrance featuring a 20th-century glazed door. To the right, there is a lower addition. The sides and rear of the cottage display square panel framing that is braced at the wall plate level to the truss divisions. Historically, the cottage was used by Erasmus Darwin as a recuperative retreat for his patients, particularly for the use of the restorative bath located to the south.
