Description
Maple Hayes is a country house built in the early 19th century, with extensive additions made between 1885 and 1890 for Worthington, the brewer. The house is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring a plinth and a band at the first floor level. It has a hipped slate roof that is set behind a blocking course and cornice, with ridge stacks. The building is three stories high and has a five-window front, with glazing bar sashes that have stone wedged heads. The top floor now features plate glass sashes, and the central first-floor window is adorned with a pediment on consoles. A French casement opens onto a balustraded flat-roofed porch, which includes a frieze and pilasters. The central entrance is accessed by steps and has double, part-glazed doors. On either side of the central block are late 19th-century wings that are two stories tall, each with a balustrade, pilasters at the corners, and three-sided bay windows that extend through both stories.
