Description

No. 22, including the conduit, is a house that has been divided into flats. It was likely built around 1792, as indicated by the date on the water conduit, and has undergone some modernization in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features plastered walls that are probably on stone rubble with brick dressings, and it has a stack in the left party wall with a plastered brick chimney shaft. The roof is slate.

The house is three storeys tall with attics and has a two-window range. The ground floor is finished in stucco with channelled rustication, and the right end is occupied by the water conduit. The front doorway is positioned to the right of centre and opens into a passage. To the left of the doorway is a window with a segmental-arch head above a horned four-pane sash. The upper two windows also have segmental-arch heads but have been replaced with uPVC windows designed to resemble four-pane sashes. The timber eaves are supported by pairs of large brackets, and the hipped roof features a front gabled dormer.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to contain interesting features. A notable subsidiary feature is the water conduit located at the right front of the building, dated 1792. This conduit is made of stone rubble and has rusticated stucco that matches the front of the house. It includes a semi-circular round-headed alcove for the tap at ground level, and above it is another round-headed hatch doorway with a pair of timber boarded doors, likely providing access to plumbing. A small twisted iron hooked arm projects from the wall above the hatch, and a stone plaque is recessed in the wall above, featuring a coat of arms and the date 1792.
