Description
The Old Chapel is a former Baptist chapel, later used as a Pentecostal church, and is currently disused as of July 1990. It was built in 1824 and enlarged with the addition of a school in 1878. The building is constructed from local limestone rubble with brick dressings, and the front is finished in stucco with rusticated quoins on the eastern corner. It has a hipped slate roof.
The exterior features a symmetrical two-window front with tall round-headed fixed-pane windows that have Gothic Y-tracery in their heads. There is a large central doorway with a flat shouldered stucco surround and a low-pitched hoodmould. The doors are recessed and consist of late 19th-century folding double doors with diagonal planks, all beneath an overlight with glazing bars. Above the doorway is an oculus window with radial glazing bars. The right side wall has four large round-headed windows similar to those at the front, but these are 24-pane sash windows with fixed-pane heads featuring Gothic Y-tracery. Other parts of the building are obscured by a tall stone boundary wall.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
