Description
21 Newcomen Road is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, which underwent modernization in the mid-19th century. It features mixed construction with stone rubble side walls and a plastered timber-framed front, along with a stone rubble axial stack, although the chimney shaft is not visible. The house has a hipped slate roof and is oriented end onto the street, being one room wide and two rooms deep. Access is via a doorway located off a narrow alley on the left (south) side, leading to a lobby entrance.
The exterior has three storeys and a two-window range. The plaster front is lightly treated to resemble ashlar. The two ground-floor windows are early 12-pane sashes, while those on the upper floors are horned replacements. The first floor features a square-cornered flat-roofed bay window with paired front 12-pane sashes, and the second floor has paired 3/6-pane sashes. There are additional replacement sashes in the rubble side wall. The doorway includes a 19th-century six-panel door with fielded upper panels and a plain overlight above. The eaves are plain, and the roof is hipped.
Inside, despite the modernization, there is a significant amount of original joinery detail that is of interest due to its simple style. This includes timber chimneypieces, a round-headed cupboard, and two-panel doors. The staircase may also be original, featuring fat stick balusters and a moulded flat handrail. The roof has been replaced in the 19th century.
