Description

Corner Cottage and Pipers Roost are two attached cottages dating from the 17th and early 18th centuries. They feature a central block that is flint banded with brick, an east bay made of brick, and a west bay that is an earlier structure originally timber framed. The cottages have a thatched roof and are single storey with an attic. The central two-bay block, which is from the early 18th century, has been extended to form the third bay, now known as Corner Cottage. The 17th century building to the west is a two-and-a-half bay single storey structure that contains the dining room of Pipers Roost and has much of its timber framing replaced with brick. The framing consists of two panels high with tension braces. The central two bays have lean-to service rooms at the rear under an extension of the roof. The entrance to the half bay of the 17th century building features a boarded door in a heavy frame, and there are paned timber casement windows. At the rear, there is a link to a brick outbuilding that was formerly a bootmaker's shop. Inside, there is a 19th century surround to the central stack, small windbraces to the central truss of the main block, a chamfered spine beam, and an early 18th century door leading to the kitchen. The 17th century structure has had its stack removed and features queen struts to the single purlin roof.
